Course Overview
A specialized optimization course on economic dispatch for integrated electricity-water systems. The course teaches how economic dispatch is conducted in energy systems that supply two types of demand: electricity demand and water demand. To do this, these systems have power stations (which produce electricity), water desalination units (which convert sea-water to fresh water) and co-production units (which produce both electricity and fresh water). You will develop an optimization model, in Python and GAMS, which will determine the output of each generating unit so that the demand is satisfied at minimum cost. This optimization problem is also known as 'electricity-water' nexus and is particularly useful in countries with water-desalination units, such as in the Middle East.
